Truckers’ Story….Chalk Outlines

Today I am giving you a story, which I have only told to a few people.  And they found it rather amusing, so I will tell it today so you can have a chuckle or two.  This is a true story, and all I can tell you is “You are not gonna believe this S***”

Back in 1998 I was a solo driver and I was in California, the town will not be named for the sake of protecting the people who were subjected to Bored Truckers humor and  entertaining themselves.  The truck stop was a local Mom and Pop type truck stop that closes everything down at 8PM and opened in the morning at 5AM…… and it was not as full as one would expect.  And it was also a Thursday morning which meant we had the pick of parking spaces.  It was around this time of the year  the fall, and there was a bunch of us parked up on the front row, near the building.  We were all talking by way of the CB radios, and what we were talking about was the fact that several of the pumps up at the Fuel Island were closed for renovation.  The pumps had this Caution Tape all around it and orange barrels there were 3 fuel islands closed and all the concrete surrounding them.  That was a pretty big area, all decked out with Caution tape.

Now I will tell you now that I am one of the ones who instigated this and it was all done for entertainment purposes.  The other 7 people involved to help pull this off were merely participating because we were all going to be there for the weekend and there was not one bar nearby, not one dance place, or club or anything.  As I said we were gabbing on the CB’s and I mentioned that when I entered the parking lot I thought something had happened with all the Yellow tape and barrels.  And several of the others thought the same thing, and I mentioned that it might be funny to put chalk outlines on the parking lot.  Well, with that said I guess you can figure out where the conversation went from there?  Yep we all 8 of us piled into one bobtail truck and went on an excursion to the local Retail store (Wal-Mart) in a quest to find Sidewalk Chalk!  My Idea……I admit it.

We all agreed that we all would take the heat if anything went wrong in this.  We waited until it got dark and there was nothing happening in the parking lot  up around 10PM…..It was totally dark because the Truck stop closed down at 8PM.  The bunch of us got our flashlights and bucket of side walk chalk, soy sauce & ketchup and went out to the marked off area…….several laid down on the concrete and we outlined them….and it so happened that one of the other guys could draw, he put a dog outline out there too…..All in colored chalk so it would show up….. and when they got up we took a mixture of ketchup and soy sauce and made a stain of blood on each outline…….(ROFLMAO)  It is still kind of funny!    It didn’t take to long  and then we went back to our individual trucks and got some sleep.  I got up around 3AM got myself dressed and ready for the trucks that would be coming in at 5AM to get fuel and coffee and see the fuel island.

A few of the other guys were up and we were talking on a different channel on the CB so the others would not hear us…..and we were all making sure what we were going to be talking about up on the regular channel that we would be on after 5AM.  I love the CB….with 40 channels to choose from it made communication easier. Well then the day started with us talking  on the regular channel about the big shootout at the truck-stop.   “Man I can’t believe the cops just shot those guys right there on the Fuel Island”  ” Yeah that was awful, I had never seen anyone shot before”  “Me either,  I had nightmares all night long, I am still in shock” “What did they do anyway?”  “We don’t know, we were told to stay in our trucks and not to get out for any reason”  “OMG did they just shoot all those people ?(8 outlines) Didn’t they try to talk them down?”  ” I think they were going to rob this place, or something….I am sure the cops knew what they were doing”   ”When did this all happen?” ” Yesterday man about 3PM, didn’t you see it on the news?”   ” Oh man did they shoot a dog too?”  “No man the bad guys shot the cops dog from the K-9 unit”

All this was taking place on the CB outside the Building mind you, the Manager had no idea what was out there yet……….Need I say more…….This went on for quite some time, and the manager never did anything to stop it.  You know they could have really called the law and made a report.  Or they could have went out there and hosed the area off and cleaned it up…..but the manager didn’t….my guess would be that no one complained about the pumps being out of order, and they didn’t have to listen to the grumblings.  Of course they probably told everyone that got fuel that some of us out in the parking lot had a sick sense of humor. They left it  there all day Friday and all day Saturday, and Sunday Morning they got out the pressure washer and cleaned it off.   I know it wasn’t right but it was hilarious and kept us entertained all weekend.

You all have a great day

That is my story and I’m sticking to it

At the Tobacco Store

I am back for a second chance, I am sorry I was away for such a long time.  I know that I missed writing and have decided that is what I really like to do.  So I have come back and am going to try even harder.  I want this to be about storytelling to keep people coming back to see what develops……I have alot of personal stories that should start off with “you are not going to believe this” or “boy have I  got one to tell you” .  Now I think I can pull that off, I always can find a story to tell.  But this past year I have come across some very interesting people who also have good stories to tell, and I have paid attention.

I have been working in a Tobacco Store only part-time and I certainly have met some really strange people that live in this little town.  I have also met some really nice and sweet people that like to talk, and share, and that you can kid around with them.   And sometimes you can clearly see that someone needs just for someone to listen and be a shoulder to lean on.  We talk about a variety of things in the store not just tobacco prices, or brands, or evils surrounding tobacco.  I get to meet new arrivals too.  I love it when the customers bring in the little bundles who have just joined their families….or when the single dad brings in the 3 year old that likes me and wants to give me a hug. Or when one of the children, or grand kids, that just started kindergarten wants to bring me a picture they drew in class just for me.  And I love it when my manager brings her 3 with her, and I get to see how much they have grown since the last time I saw them.  The oldest of which is 16 and not stuck up as most 16 yr. old are.  I think she likes talking with just about everyone and is so much like her mom, it is scary.  They are like 2 peas in a pod which they will never admit it to each other.

The thing that strikes me the most about working there is the fact that If I miss a day by trading days off with one another our people who regularly see us notice>>>If I am sickly they notice.  Recently my Doctor changed my medicine for high blood pressure and I am having all sorts of problems especially going pale and being dizzy, more so than usual.  The regulars….. they noticed and said something to the manager that she should keep an eye on me.  How thoughtful is that?  Or sometimes the customers will offer to go and get us something to eat especially on the weekend shift because they know 10-12 hours straight with no breaks and no one else in the store there is no time to get a bite to eat.  I have had several people offer to go to local fast food to get me something>>>you look pale and need to eat.  They do it to the manager too, she is so skinny and needs to eat.  They do not do it to get anything in return, that is what blows my mind in this day and time.  They do it to be good to us, and they say it quite matter  of fact……”would you do it for me if you thought I needed it?”  I say yes, and they say “I know you would, cause you are just that kind of person”  Let me tell you that makes me feel so good, and I do like this job.
